What kind of photos will I take at a photography workshop?
The following photos are all taken during our workshops around Auckland and New Zealand.
We’ll teach you all of the methods we used to create these images. You don’t need the latest equipment, just a decent lens (which we can provide) and a bit of technique!
Astro Photography Waitawa and Duder Regional Parks, Auckland:
We’re in this location at the beginning of the Milky Way season through Summer and Autumn. You’ll capture the Milky Way rising up over the hills of both parks, Kawakawa Bay, and the Coromandel.
From around March you’ll be able to see the galactic core. It is visible earlier in the year but only if you’re willing to hang around until about 4am!
Astro Photography Hunua Falls:
This is our Autumn and Early Winter Location. It’s a tough spot to photograph, with cold temperatures, spray from the waterfall, and very dark foregrounds. But the results are worth it!
Glow Worm Photography in Waipu Caves, Northland:
Just 2 hours north of Auckland you’ll find the Waipu Caves. The colony here is large and bright, rivalling most of the large commercial caves in the country. We visit in the spring and early summer when the colony is at its best.
Astro and Wildlife Photography at Muriwai Beach, Auckland:
This is one of the few places in the world where you can combine astrophotography and wildlife photography in a single image! From August the Gannets (seabirds) return from their feeding grounds in Australia to mate and nest. Keeping their eggs warm means they don’t move during the long exposures necessary for astrophotography.
There are also a number of other exciting views in this spot with the waves surging over rocks.
We visit here from August through November.
Other Locations Around New Zealand:
Occasionally we host workshops in other parts of New Zealand such as Tongariro, Central Otago, Northland and more. During these we teach astrophotography, as well as other techniques such as landscape photography, long exposures, light-painting, time-lapse, and much much more.
Keep an eye on the home page for details of upcoming workshops.
